Evaluation of completed video

Initially I wanted to create the video with paint and spray-paint and to have a complex, original and inventive end result. I included the full, detailed original plan in the post below. But unfortunately in the end I did not have the time or the equipment to facilitate my needs. Cheaply I did everything in flash in the end using my original walk cycle storyboard character and creating the backgrounds myself which would represent the world's changed from natural to industrial. I would've liked to have added sounds, rain, weather changing etc. to make the video more complex. I could not find the time to do any of this and I also am lacking on flash skills. Overall I'm not very pleased but also not unhappy with the end result. It could've been a lot better and it also could've been a lot worse. I cannot blame the poor result on lack of time but a number of reasons in it's lack of quality. Hopefully next time it'll be better. I am keeping hold of all of my notes, drawings and my full original plan because I would like to create the original idea in the future for maybe my BA or just as a personal project. Anyhow, I'm moderately pleased with the simplistic but good looking flash backgrounds I did. They are simple and are not well drawn instead they were quickly drawn and are not made to any brilliant standard but I think they are effective in their simplicity. In the beginning I wanted to create a man walking his dog which would've took a long time to be made to a perfect standard with well drawn walk cycles (in sync) so I used a basic character that I had drawn and looped the animation to give it the illusion that he is walking along as the background move. The character wasn't very time consuming to create or difficult even and originality isn't even apparent but I'm not unhappy with it. I quite like the moving gif image. Overall I obviously wanted the end result to have a lot of elements to it which made the plan way too complicated because it was not a complicated project. I set the bar way too high in my initial plans.

The Character and The Dog
The character will be a simple character. It will be a man walking his dog, possibly an elderly man. I will create and design the character after studying walk cycles perfecting the way the character moves as he walks through video and through the story. The dog, will be a labrador. Both the man and the dog will be as simple and easy to draw and will hopefully be as effective and interesting as a more complex and defined drawing. My initial idea for the character(s) was to make them more complex and more detailed drawings and add them on flash after I had filmed the background and the continuity of the storyline behind the actual character. In one sense this may have been easier. I wouldn't have to fiddle with getting the character's walk cycle and continuation into sync with the rest of the picture and ultimately to perfection. But there is also the fact that I'm an amateur at flash! And I also have to take into consideration that to the viewer of the video (including myself) the video would seem less genuine if it wasn't painted into the background in the actual making of the video and the evolution of the background. At the end I think it would be a lot less effective.

Like I said, the drawing of the fellow and his little dog I will draw from studying walk cycles and they'll be simple, but hopefully effective. Once these have been drawn over and over again with perfect seperate walk cycles I will cut them out and use them as stencils. The continuous line of cutouts/stencils will be used as spraypaint of the background in a frame to frame basis which will eventually give the illusion of movement from the character.

- One Alternate idea I had for the movement and production of the character was to create the character, make him more detailed and more complex (along with his dog) and scan them into photoshop, edit and then create a walk cycle and then from this I print these out seperately the different stages of the walk cycle. So in the video; the frame by frame would consist of these printouts and for each frame I would swap the last cutout and place the next in exactly the right spot giving the illusion of movement. I have already practiced this method in a side-project from this one. This would be a far easier process and could possibly look better for the character as he and the dog would be more than silouettes and also I would make less mistakes as I would with spraypaint. But there is also the fact that the walk cut out would be hard to place in exactly the right spot to get the walk cycle right. But I feel this method would also be less genuine than the one I am planning to use. (So this is more of a back-up method).

Background
The background will be made from thin lots of acrylic paint that I will be able to easily change an object into something else with the paint. For example, in my video one part of it is a group of trees forming into some sort of power plant. In doing this I'll constantly be rubbing bits out and painting over past objects and using one object and turning it into something new. It's a process that I'm unfamiliar with but I'm eager to see how it all turns out.

How the background changes throughout and what to
The video starts at the home of the man with his dog. As he walks past sloping hills and a grey murky, dull sky. As he walks these large, moor-like, rows of empty hills slowly merge into trees and here, we find our character in a woodland with huge, harrowing long trees that loom over him with the sun and the light slowly breaking through the thick green forest. Slowly the light dies away fading back do a watercolour grey and thick waves of rain and thunder disheartens the skies as the forest steeps lower and lower, shrinking into the ground into nothingness and from this grows towers from a parade of industrial plants. Rows of them far into the distance, thick white smoke gushing out of the brim of them, clearly visible rising up to the dark, navy skies. In the dark image portrayed; lighting strikes fiercely and effectively. Then, after the condemnation of the lightning; the industrial scene melts and sinks into the ground. From this a lake is created. It's crystal and it's beautiful. And in the background rises mountains in the distance. A perfect, peaceful image to the setting of the sun in the now bright, blue skies. And after all of this the man stops at a bench which is at the foreground of this sublime view of the mountains. He sits, with his dog and rests.

How the Video will be put together
The video will be put together using stop motion with my digital camera. Every time I make a new edit to the paint in the background or the man moves slightly the camera will take note of the new change and each take will be a new seperate frame. Presumably, I'll need help doing this because I'll be wrapped up in the painting and I'll need someone else to function the camera or else I'll have to walk back and forth between the painting and the camera which would waste an awful lot of time. Hopefully a teacher or even one of my classmates would help me out with this anomaly.
After the video is completed I'll need to use Adobe After Effects to compile the (JPeg) images of the video together because using my digital camera would mean that I have hundreds of stand-alone JPeg's that need to be strung together to make a motion video. After these images have been comiled together to make the motion video I'll need to edit the time lapse between the frames to rid abnormalities in the way everything varying from the characters to the objects in the video move. I don't know how drastic the changes will be to the time lapse yet. I also may edit things such as colouring, lighting, digital movements etc. But one thing that I am certain to add is sound effects to the video. They'll be much needed in the events that take place in the video such as lighting, winds, birds singing etc. And I'll also be adding musc to the video to give it as much life and as effective as I can possibly make it.
I may also have to have the painting either pinned up or on a stand so that I can get the lighting right and I can also have the camera on a stand and in exactly the right place taking shots of the whole painting and leaving out all excess like walls or posters in the background for example. Neither the painting or the camera will be moved until the video is complete.

How long it will take to put together
Because I cannot in any means leave my equiptment over-night in the college I'll have no other choice than to complete the whole video in one day. Other reasons such as the lighting of the video could be ruined or changed dramatically abrupting the video and it's quality if the camera or the painting is moved to a different place in it's duration or maybe even moved just slightly. And also when I am painting the paint would be better for me to form an object into something new if the paint was wet. If I did half of the video one day then edited it the next the finished piece would more than likely be a lot worse quality than if I did it one day for a number of reasons. The change in the quality and the halfway point would be clearly visible in the finished piece. The best choice for me to make to create this video is to bring in someone to help me create the video on a friday (which is my usual day off) of which I have no lessons and there will be no one to distract me from my work, so I will be able to spend literally all day for the making of this video. I'll obviously need a second person to help me because I cannot man the camera whilst painting.

Sounds and Music involved in the video
The Sounds of Silence by Simon and Garfunkel will be the music throughout the video. The song I feel perfectly captures the image and the mood of the video. "In restless dreams I walked alone...Through narrow streets of cobbled stone..." The words are a sort of reflection the the surroundings of the video and character himself as he walks through this beautiful and realistic but sorrowful landscape which is full of character. I will also be adding sound effects to my video. Effects such as the wind blowing, lighting striking, sounds of the sea to add a sense of realism to the video.

What the Story is about and represents
The story is about a man who is simply walking his dog. As the simplistic man walks his dog he unawarely walks through a landscape which dramatically changes through time and space itself wheras the man stays does not. The surroundings the man comes across in the video are not objects in themselves. They can be shaped and formed unpredictably into something new and unwordly, dark and deathly, full of sunshine or happiness from natural to industrial. The dreamworld is complex, it's full of emotion and feeling as the man walks his dog he is blissfully unaware of the world he lives in.
The short story I have planned (and at this point I haven't the vaguest clue how it will turn out because I haven't even started) represents the fact that the world itself, our surroundings, the natural or man-made structures, everything is just bigger than ourselves. Unpredictable in a way. We walk to our works, our colleges, our houses or churches every day and nobody is fully aware of the complex, dramatic or even destructive wonders outside in our worlds every single day.
I want to emphasise the story on the surrounds (the background, objects and structures) in the video as opposed the man or his dog. I'll be expressing this in the way I make it as I'm planning to be using acrylic paint for the backgrounds and simply a stencil and spraypaint for the man.

How long the video will be
My aim for the video's duration is roughly 30 seconds. Now in camera shots, an image a frame is an awful lot of frames. I'm aiming for 12 frames a second (of which I'm unsure of) which would be roughly 400 images. I will also have to consider the time space between certain frames in the video because obviously there will be more space needed between certain time frames than others. Each different part of the video I'm aiming for 5 or 6 seconds long until I subtly but quickly change it to the next part. Because each image is going to be a new frame and each frame will have a certain change made (big or small) to the picture this means that there will actually be a lot going on in the video and it's details in the paint work.

Animation Company 3. Hannah Barbera Productions Inc,

Hanna-Barbera Productions (which now studio was Cartoon Network Studios) is an Animation studio in the United States, owned by Time Warner, which also owns the more widespread Warner Bros. banner. Because of this dual cartoon ownership, in several giant Hanna-Barbera, the local Boomerang station are operated as "classics."

Hanna and Barbera were first teamed together while working at the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer animation studio in 1939. Their first directorial project was a cartoon entitled Puss Gets the Boot (1940), which served as the genesis of the popular Tom and Jerry cartoon series. Hanna, Barbera, and MGM live-action director George Sidney formed Hanna-Barbera Productions in 1944 while working for the studio, and used the side company to work on ancillary projects, including early television commercials and the original opening titles to I Love Lucy.

After an award-winning stint in which they won eight Oscars, MGM closed their animation studio in 1957, as it felt it had acquired a reasonable backlog of shorts for re-release. Hanna and Barbera hired most of their MGM unit to work for Hanna-Barbera Productions, which became a full-fledged production company starting in 1957. The decision was made to specialize in television animation, and the studio's first series was The Ruff & Reddy Show, which premiered on NBC in December 1957. In order to obtain working capital to produce their cartoons, Hanna-Barbera made a deal with the Screen Gems television division of Columbia Pictures in which the new animation studio received working capital in exchange for distribution rights. The company never had a building of its own until 1963, when the Hanna-Barbera Studio, located at 3400 Cahuenga Blvd. in West Hollywood, California, was opened. The Columbia/Hanna-Barbera partnership lasted until 1967, when Hanna and Barbera sold the studio to Taft Broadcasting while retaining their positions at the studio.

The studio is responsible for various different eras in cartoon history and for many cartoons themselves. The studios was the creator of the cult-cartoon Scooby Doo and also The Flintstones. The name of the company slowly began to dissapear in the later cartoons which Cartoon Network slowly gotten complete control over after having a hand in producing.

Strange Connection work (unsatisfactory and unused)






I wanted to experiment with a few different design companies to create other than Sacred Centigrade. So I came up with Strange Connection Inc. And I drew up and did some first basic designs for the creation of this company. I don't go very far with it because it was taking too much time away from the Sacred Centigrade. The designs I did for this (although there are very little) aren't bad, it's just a matter of it didn't work out. And I also made a business card for this. Well, at least I can say I tried. And I also think the top Typography design would've worked well as a second Sacred Centigrade logo as I think it looks good and is quite well designed and thinking about it I actually put more physical effort into it as it is completely hand drawn whereas the logos for Centigrade are mostly photoshop work.

Once zoomed into the tops of these letter heads you can see the different filters giving each letterhead it's own individual texture and look. As simple and as easy the filters are to make they can actually (if you used well and not over-used) make a design look very professional and can create illusive sort of textures to design.

The business cards were probably the most difficult of all of the design tasks for our companies set for us. We had to come up with backdrops for these designs in exactly the right sizes, we experimented with our logos editing the structures, colours, shadows, and creating different layounts in all sorts of different ways for them. On one business card you could have bright sky blue text going horizontal and on the next you could have it vertical was an eye-sore yellow, not is I'd ever use those colours. We also had to create a bogus address, fax, phone number and all the contact rubbish which I thought was a creative element to the cards and it was enjoyable making your own elaborate contact info and all of the cards generally, it gave us a chance to think and work like professional designers and let out shine on our creative sides. I especially enjoyed creating backdrops for the cards, making my own different looks of texture and detailed colour schemes was enjoyable and was hard to do at times. You could easily make the scheme and look of the card too boring or to over-the-top in some way, shape or form.
Of all of the cards my personal favourite is No.2. I like how it gives of a sort of steel illusion to it, it's subtle and it's almost realistic in the way of the gradient. I also like the way it is layed out. Some of my other business cards look terrible in the colours or how they're layed out. For example I really resent No.1. It is like No.2 in the way of the colour in the way of the text, logo and the metal sort of scheme but as it is layed out it is the opposite. It just (to me) looks poorly designed and completely unprofessional. The fact that the logo is on a slant (Is it meant to be layed back? I don't know!) makes it look kind of amateur. Even the contact info is in an odd place, I don't know whjat I was thinking. But then again, it is easily editable.

Backdrops

























I very much like the idea of being in The Observer one day. Well as I doubt very much that will happen I did it myself! It think this idea turned out well. It does look quite genuine. I like this because it's different. I mean if you're practicing in making fake design companies and commiting the work of this 'company' to products then T Shirts, Cars, Hats, Buildings, Tattos ect. Whatever! Although undeniably some will turn out brilliant things like that are obvious choices for products and are more or less used up. I wanted to be different in the way of my creations. The Observer turned out pretty well I think the other two are kinda' poor and could've had more time spent on them editing the perspective and distortion of the logos to fit the space provided. The buildings are just shit and the floor design I created is really badly distorted in the text. Better look next time, eh?

Badges



Although I like one or two of these there is no real consistency involved in the making of these badges. The designs of these have barely any scheme to them and maybe I could've spent time on making badges that look remotely alike and are linked in the way of the colours layout and the way they're produced as opposed to practicing random designs which I think would look good as badges (which I did). Some of these badges are suitable to my company and look good whereas others have a bad choice of colours and layout and just don't look very well made. Of all of them I do like the top and bottom middle ones. The bottom one because I cut out the different text structures from my logo and edited and moved them about in suit of the badge and I think the shine I made suited the badge well wheras the others are just flat colours. It makes it look more 3D. And I like the top one because of how it is layed out I think the flat colours express character in the badge, it stands out from the rest of them. Besides these, the top, far right badge I think does not work well at all. I've not used orange or red or any remotely flamboyant colours in any of my other products or designs; so this very badge stands out in a bad way because it is not commited to everything else because it is not in line with the whole scheme of my designs.

DVD and Cover




Although the DVD disc at the top is pretty plain and mediocre, well amateur I'm quite proud of my DVD cover. The DVD disc I initially thought would look better if it wasn't full of crazy colours and pictures and it would look cooler of it were just simple, shiny, and with basic text. But looking at it now it looks too basic. I'm thinking it may have looked better if the SC logo faded in the background would be better if it were not on the disc and it was just the Sacred Centigrade text itself. It would have been better if I committed more time to this piece. The DVD cover on the other hand I think I produced well. Making it look as genuine as I possibly could and to also make it look interesting and to get anyone reading the blurb or just simply walking past it in a shop hooked and wanting to take a closer look or even throw it on the DVD player. I want it to look fascinating. Maybe not the last part but I think I succeeded in making it look moderately professional and well produced! This idea gave me a chance to come up with imaginative disc features and an interesting blurb. But hey! When you buy my DVd you get your money's worth. You even get a poster, a free booklet and postcards in mine!

Complimentary Slips



The reason I really enjoyed designing these was because the comp slips idea gave me a unique chance to play around with different types of professional colour schemes and clean, crisp, subtle designs and layouts. I think a lot of these are suitable for what I was doing, others are not and are nicer to look at and are more professional than others. For example, my favourite of all of these is the bottom, second to the left end slip. I think the cream, bold text which is neatly laid out goes perfect with the lighter, graphite grey background. It is by far the best of all 10 slips (in my opinion). But as much as I like this design I think the top, second to far left is more suitable to my 'company' and the project and hand and to all of the other things I done previously. This is because in all of the other products I design (such as business cards) the majority of them had darker (usually charcoal grey) backgrounds which turned out to be quite dark, solid colours with lighter, plainer and more solid black and white text. Although I also played around with different filters, colour schemes and textures for my business cards the colour schemes turned out to be considerably different to these comp slips.

Sacred Centigrade Logo Versions 3 & 4



These designs are the same as the previous two but I inverted the colours clearly. The top right design when zoomed in is made out of long thin lines and is stemmed from the idea of the design on the previous design with the CCTV camera concept. I think these two are far better to look at than the more plain previous two. I think with the dark background and the deeper details coming to light in this design I think you can see the shapes and structures of this design a lot more clearly in comparison to the other two more primitive design. And overall I just think these two look better. Especially the bottom one. In the Comp slips I made plain white versions of these with a small shadow, just for illustrator. Check it out. It is not as good as these two by a long shot but it is more suitable for what I was doing at the time. These two didn't go well with a lot of the colour schemes in the comp slips.

Sacred Centigrade Logo Versions 1 & 2



This is the official logo I would eventually use as for the duration and everything in my work. It was originally taken from the elaborate Typography design I did which I named 'Mirror Shine' which consisted of some sort of cleaning product. It turned out pretty well. To make my Sacred Centigrade design I shortly studied the structure of Typefaces and structures. The design itself I think gives of some sort of skeleton look. The top left design is the same as the bottom but I came up with a sort of CCTV camera idea. It is the same in the text below when zoomed in and is more effective than the just plain black design.

Transformation of a Werewolf

After the full moon rises:

1. He becomes sweaty, nautious and will feel deep shards of pain throughout the body.

2. The shoulders and spine will feel like they're breaking apart! The shoulders will suddenly bulge out with a crunching sound and crippling pain as the bones and muscles start to expand.

3. The spine will start to grow out and become increasingly visible as the back grows out and becomes larger. The spine will become so large that the person who is experiencing this pain will start to resemble the shape of a dog. The neck will be now longer visible and all that you will be able to see is the spine snd the huge broad shoulders.

4. Thick chunks of hair will start to spout out all over the persons body. Originating from the head, stomach and arm pits and like a virus it was start to spread all over the body. The person is no longer classed as human.

5. The shoulder muscles will continue to swell up with new found muscle and will be so big that they will rest just below the ears. Giving the human a look of a grizzly bear.

6. The biceps and triceps expand and grow enormous. The forearms are also now as thick as tree trunks.

- By now the pain this person will be going through is unimaginable and excruciating beyond all recoginition.

7. The legs expand in length and the feet bones will break into place. The legs are now more curved and are by far longer and also more muscular. The toes now emulate paws and they will look like they beast is walking on tip toes. This will help them run faster for the hunt. The shape and muscle mass of the legs will also help support the heavy weight of the muscular feind.

8. The eyebrow ridges and forehead will bulge out. Then the nose will lose shape and will form the shape of a snout as it extends out of the face. The skull's shape deforms and in crunches into the shape of a wolf.

9. The biceps, back, arms and shoulders take one more implosion and grow out a tiny bit.

10. The teeth and claws extend and extrude from the person to make sharp, deathly daggers glistening in the moonlight.

11. He blinks for a second. When he opens, his eyes are a deep shade of a vainy yellow. with scarlet pupils.

12. What was once a man, is now a beast.

Walk Cycles

What is a Walk Cycle?
- In animation, a walk cycle is a sequence of frames representing a (usually human) walk movement. Walk cycles are important, because when a walking ...

Components of a Walk Cycle:

Arcs of movement – not straight lines
Arms counterbalance legs
Contact – feet at furthest extensions
Recoil - character impacts ground. Lowest position. Arms furthest out. Front foot fully in contact with ground; back foot has just lifted up.
Passing Position - body is higher, leg is straight
High Point – highest position. Character's body stretched to the maximum. Leading foot goes out, back foot heel just starting to leave the ground.
Walk Cycle vs. walk across - keep character static, move background - body does not move forward from center line, only feet slide back.

Variations – Adding Personality To Your Walk

* Double Bounce Walk - traditional Disney Mickey Mouse walk - down on contact and passing, up on inbetweens. Try the opposite too!
* Subtleties – hips, shoulders, head, feet, etc. And Timing!
* Leading with different body parts suggests personality traits - Examples
* Walk variations – Shuffle, Sneak, Strut…

Why we need to use 24 frames for a second in animation

In video technology, 24p refers to a video format that operates at 24 frames per second (or typically, 23.976frame/s when using equipment based around NTSC frame rates) frame rate with progressive scanning (not interlaced). Originally, 24p was used in the non-linear editing of film-originated material. Today, 24p formats are being increasingly used for aesthetic reasons in image acquisition, delivering film-like motion characteristics. Some vendors advertise 24p products as a cheaper alternative to film acquisition.
When working entirely within the digital non-linear domain, 24p material is as easily handled as material at any other frame rate. However, 24p material requires care when it is processed using equipment designed for standard video frame rates.
There are two common workflows for processing 24p material using video equipment, one using PAL frame rates, and the other using NTSC frame rates. Of these two, the PAL route is the simpler, but each has its own complications.

Donald and Doofy



It freaks me out how easy to draw they are and how incredibly basic they are but they're some of the best drawings in the world. They're awesome. It just goes to show that sometimes the better things are a lot more simple and require a lot less effort. In turn, they don't go overboard.

Bladerunner Storyboard













A section of Ridley Scott’s storyboard sketches for Bladerunner, demonstrating once again his flair for drawing and his passion for details. These dystopian scenes in particular – Deckards visit to the Tyrell Corp HQ – were inspired by Ridley’s youth and memories of the night-time vista of oil refineries and steel mills, the fabric of 60’s industrial Teeside (North East England).

How a Storyboard is Made

A story-board for an animation movie is much the same for a feature film, excepting that the scenes suggest precisely the length of the movie for the particular scene. Each scene clearly depicts the characters, their placement in relation to the back ground, action, dialogues and camera movements. Such scenes are described as ‘slugged' and the entire story board indicates the total duration of the animation movie.
Placement or Location of Characters:

The camera is the eye of the viewer. Therefore, the characters are located in relation to the background and context of the story and the dialogue from the sound track.
Camera Movement:

The location of camera is indirectly suggestive of how the characters present themselves to the viewer. In order that the narration of the story is made effective, the camera is shifted from top angle to low angle, panned from east to west or north to south or vice versa or trucked in(zoom in) or trucked out(zoom out).
Action:

The narration of the story determines the action of the characters. Their gestures corresponding to the dialogues, their walk, or run or jump etc according to the situation denote the action of the characters.
Dialogues:

Recording of the dialogues or the sound track is the first step in animation. The scenes are divided according to the script of the story. The approximate length of the movie is calculated based on the sound track and this forms the basis for the construction of the story-board.
Example:

Let us assume,
we are animating the most popular nursery rhyme,

"Twinkle twinkle little star.
How I wonder what you are.
Up above the world so high.
Like a diamond in the sky".


The rhyme's duration is about 15 seconds.
A story-board can be prepared for an animation work that lasts 15 seconds.

Looney Tunes is a Warner Bros. animated cartoon series which ran in many movie theaters from 1929 to 1970. It preceded the Merrie Melodies series and is WB's first animated theatrical series. The regular Warner Bros. animation cast also became known as the "Looney Tunes" (often misspelled, intentionally or not, as "Looney Toons"), particularly in the UK, where 'Tunes' and 'Toons' are phonetically different, unlike in the US.
The name Looney Tunes is a variation on Silly Symphonies, the name of Walt Disney's concurrent series of music-based cartoon shorts. Looney Tunes originally showcased Warner-owned musical compositions through the adventures of cartoon characters such as Bosko and Buddy. Later Looney Tunes shorts featured popular characters such as Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, Elmer Fudd, Sylvester, Tweety, Marvin the Martian, Taz, Wile E. This is a video of one of Looney Tunes most famous and most loved characters. Daffy Duck. Who is also my favourite Looney Tunes character. The video is also one of the very early episodes and the show has been running a hell of a long time!

Animation Example No.5 The Wombles


I was going to put on Wallace and Gromit but instead I put used this less well known and older animation. In old kids programme called The Wombles. I don't know why but I like the old programmes like The Wombles because of the play-dough animation which I think is a very interesting way to do animation. Like for example the old Postman Pat and Fireman Sam, I like how they're made and the way the characters move and the more bland and realer characters that digital cartoon characters. As opposed to digital cartoons that are mostly seen on TV.

And it actually looks like it's made in Yorkshire.

This is a well known graffiti animation video created by Blu. A graffiti artist who creates motion videos from wall art he paints. the video is a brilliant example of how some artists think outside the box with their work and express an extreme amount of creativity. This is possibly the best wall-painted animation I've ever seen.

This is a music video created by someone called Rymdreglage. The animation consists of 1500 hours of moving an awful lot of lego bricks and taking snapshots of them. This is the peak of great animation videos consisting of lego. It reminds me of the White Stripes video "Fell in Love with a Girl". But this is far better.

Herbert Lubalin


Herbert Lubalin was an american Graphic Designer who worked with American author, editor, publisher and photo journalist Ralph Ginzburg on three of Ginzburg's magazines Eros, Fact and Avant Gard. He was responsible for most of the visual creativity of these three publications. He also design a very influential typeface which was named 'ITC Avant Garde'.

After working with Ginzburg; Herbert Lubalin went into his own private practice. Since Lubalin had his own studio he had the freedom to design for a wide variety of projects which would include poster and magazine design to packaging and identity solutions.

After 10 years or working alone in a private practice he worked on a wide variety of projects. He also managed to create a Typographic Journal for U&Lc magazine which would serve as not only an advertisement for his designs but also a opportunity for further Typographic experimentation. Lubalin enjoyed the freedom his magazine provided him; he was quoted as saying “Right now, I have what every designer wants and few have the good fortune to achieve. I’m my own client. Nobody tells me what to do.

Margo Chase is an American Graphic Artist/Designer. Her original aim was to one day become a veterinarian but she soon realised she was meant for the world of Design instead. after lacking in solid work Margo founded 'The Chase Design company' which turned out to be very successful. The company had been founded almost 20 years ago. Her company has gone on to create branding for numerous entities and she's also created logos for Teen-Horror shows Angel and Buffy The Vampire Slayer aswell as working for big singers such as Cher and Madonna.

Front Page enhanced




The front page of my 15 page booklet after I loaded it through Photoshop and the centrepeice.

The Centrepeice



This image may not need an explination as to how I did it but it's something I never tried before and it's different. Firstly I took a picture of myself. After doing so I put it into Photoshop, upped the levels, contrast and took a small amount of the brightness down. This would in turn make the photo look obviously darker but more mysterious and it was crisper. After doing this I went into the Filter Gallery and then onto Halftone Pattern and made sure it was dots and neither of the other to (because they're rubbish). The filter gave the picture a sort of blue shade to it. I then printed out the picture got a wet paintbrush that had recently been dabbed into black watercolour paint and went over the picture (especially the darker parts). After this the photo was damp and looked useless. I then got out felt tip pen and went round different darker parts of my face so you can certain details and the outline of my face. After doing this I flipped the picture over, at this point it looks almost like a watercolour painting and then lastly I glued it to my collage.

...and I'm going to do 15 pages. And I don't know where I'm gonna get the time to do it!

Oh and the white excess bits with the black paint slashes on either side will probably be cut out when I actually put it through to Photoshop and InDesign.
The image itself will also without a doubt be enhanced.
